Flexible Picture Rails

Standard picture rail cannot follow a curve. These can. Each profile is supplied in straight 2.4m lengths and shaped where it is fitted: warm it with a heat gun, bend it against the wall, and it sets hard in that shape as it cools. No kerfing the back of a rigid board, no cutting a bay into short segments, no filled joints showing through the paint.

There are seven profiles in the range, Torus, Victorian, Regency, Bolection, Ogee, Ovolo and Chamfered, in sizes from 18 x 40mm to 25 x 55mm, from GBP 80 per 2.4m length. Each is cut to the same profile as its rigid counterpart, so standard picture rail can run the straight walls while the flexible version takes the curve, with no visible change in the detail line where they meet.

Every length is machined to order at our Epsom workshop in moisture resistant, FSC certified MDF, and supplied factory primed and sanded, ready for topcoat. UK delivery is 5 to 7 working days. Browse the seven profiles below, or see our MDF Picture Rails for straight runs, Fire Rated MDF Picture Rails for HMO and commercial work, and Flexible Skirting Boards to carry the same curve down to floor level.

Flexible Picture Rails Overview

Why Choose Flexible Picture Rails?

A rigid picture rail fitted against a curved wall gives you two options, neither of them good. Cut it into short segments and fill the joints, or kerf the back and hope the cuts do not telegraph through the paint. Flexible MDF removes the choice: the profile itself bends.

  • Runs bay windows, curved stair walls, arches and rounded reception rooms in one continuous length
  • Cut to the same profiles as our rigid MDF picture rails, so curved and straight sections match exactly
  • Moisture resistant grade MDF throughout, and FSC certified
  • Supplied factory primed and sanded, so it goes straight to topcoat

Flexible Profile Options

How They’re Used

Flexible picture rail earns its place wherever the wall is not straight:

  • Bay windows, where a rigid rail needs three or four mitres and still sits proud of the plaster
  • Curved stair walls and rounded landings in period properties
  • Arched openings and rounded corners in new build and remodelled interiors
  • Circular and curved reception rooms where the rail has to run unbroken

Why Buy From MR Mouldings?

MR Mouldings has been manufacturing and supplying MDF and timber mouldings since 2003, from our workshop on Longmead Industrial Estate in Epsom, Surrey. Our sales team brings more than 60 years of combined experience in the timber trade, and our mouldings have been fitted in over 10,000 homes.

Flexible picture rail is a specialist line, and it is worth buying from a supplier who also makes the rigid version. Every flexible profile here is machined to order to match its standard counterpart, so the curved and straight sections of the same room come from one supplier on one profile specification. If you are unsure how many lengths you need, or which size suits your ceiling height, call us on 01372 740777 and we will work it through with you.

Flexible Picture Rails FAQ

The common questions, answered — so you order the right profile first time.

A high flexibility, moisture resistant MDF core developed for shaped work. It handles like standard MDF at room temperature and holds the same crisp profile detail, but becomes pliable once warmed. All of our MDF is FSC certified.

Warm the length evenly with a heat gun, keeping the gun moving so the surface does not scorch. While it is still warm, bend it against the wall and fix it with adhesive, pins or screws. It holds the curve permanently once cool. Do not attempt to bend the profile cold, as MDF can crack or snap.

Yes. Each flexible profile is cut to the same shape as the rigid MDF rail of the same name, so you can run standard rail along the straight walls and flexible rail through the curve in the same room without the detail line shifting.

Sizes run from 18 x 40mm to 25 x 55mm depending on the profile, all supplied in 2.4m lengths. Prices start at GBP 80 per length, and every length is cut to order.

They arrive factory primed and sanded, so you can go straight to a topcoat. Two coats with a light scuff between them usually gives a wall ready finish.
