Lighter lines after the Victorians

Edwardian architrave sits between Victorian weight and modern plainness. The ornament thins out, the curves soften and the sections get shallower — a reaction against Victorian heaviness that still reads as a period architrave rather than a contemporary one. The Edwardian era ran from 1901 to 1910, but the style carried on until the First World War and its simpler mouldings persisted into the 1920s and 30s.

Does it suit your house?

Edwardian houses were built mostly between 1901 and 1914 — wider and lighter than their Victorian predecessors, with bigger windows and noticeably plainer joinery. If your house dates from that stretch, or from the interwar years that followed, these profiles are closer to its original architrave than anything Victorian.
