MDF Wall Panelling

What is MDF wall panelling?

MDF wall panelling refers to decorative moulding profiles fixed to a wall surface to create a panelled effect. The most common approach in UK homes is the framed panel look, where individual panel mouldings are cut and fixed to the wall in rectangular or square frames, creating the illusion of raised or recessed panelling without any structural work. The frames are filled with paint or wallpaper, or left as a flat painted surface, to create contrast between the moulding and the wall behind.

MDF is the most widely used material for this application because it is dimensionally stable, takes paint cleanly, and is available in a far greater range of profiles than solid timber at a significantly lower cost. Pre-primed MDF panelling requires no sealing or sanding before painting and is ready to decorate immediately after fixing.

Choosing your panelling style

The profile of your panel moulding determines the character of the finished wall. For contemporary interiors, a square-edge or minimal stepped profile gives a clean architectural line without decorative detail. For period properties, an ogee or ovolo panel moulding adds the kind of curved relief that sits naturally alongside Victorian skirting boards, cornices, and dado rails.

Our range breaks down into modern panel mouldings for contemporary applications and Victorian panel mouldings for period-style schemes. If your project involves curved walls, bay windows, or arched openings, our flexible panel mouldings follow the curve cleanly without kerfing or heating.

Wall panel kits

If you want a complete panelling solution rather than individual moulding lengths, our wall panel kits provide everything needed to panel a standard wall section. Each kit includes the panel moulding lengths pre-cut to size for a specific wall width, reducing measuring and cutting time on site. Kits are available in multiple profile options and wall widths.

Using wall panelling with dado rails and skirting

The most versatile panelling scheme combines a dado rail at the top of the panelled section and skirting boards at the base, with panel mouldings creating the framed detail between them. This approach works in any room height and gives a fully resolved period or contemporary finish depending on the profiles chosen. For a cohesive result, matching the panel moulding profile to the dado rail profile is recommended. Our dado rail collection covers the same range of profiles as the panel moulding range, making it straightforward to mix and match.

Materials and specification

All our MDF wall panelling and panel mouldings are manufactured in high-density MDF, pre-primed and ready to paint. Flexible MDF panel mouldings are manufactured with a pliable core suitable for curved surfaces. Fire-rated MDF panel mouldings meet UK Building Regulation requirements for commercial premises, HMOs, schools, and care homes. If you need a profile matched to existing panelling in a period property, our bespoke moulding matching service can produce a custom panel moulding to your exact specification.
