What is Interior Wall Cladding?
Interior wall cladding is a system of boards fixed directly to the wall surface to create a continuous textured finish in place of painted plaster. Unlike wall panelling - which uses moulding strips to create raised geometric frames on a flat wall - cladding covers the wall surface completely, board by board, with the profile of the boards themselves creating the decorative effect.
The result ranges from subtle to dramatic depending on the profile chosen, the height of the installation, and the colour it is painted. A half-wall run of tongue and groove in the same colour as the wall above reads as quiet and architectural. A full-height installation in a deep, saturated colour becomes the defining feature of the room.

Tongue and Groove Cladding
The most widely used interior cladding profile. Each board has a protruding tongue on one edge that slots into a corresponding groove on the next, creating an interlocking run with no visible fixings and a seamless surface from end to end. The meeting point of each board creates a subtle V-shadow line that gives the wall its characteristic linear texture.
Tongue and groove cladding works at full wall height or at dado height. Boards can be fixed vertically - drawing the eye upward and making rooms feel taller - or horizontally, for a more contemporary, layered effect. Browse our tongue and groove cladding collection for the full range.
Butt and Bead Cladding
Where tongue and groove creates a V-line shadow at each joint, butt and bead cladding creates a bead - a small rounded detail at the point where adjacent boards meet. The result is a slightly more decorative surface texture with a softer, more rounded character than the sharp V-line of tongue and groove. It suits period and transitional interiors where a more traditional cladding aesthetic is called for.
Cladding Trim
Every interior cladding installation at dado height needs a finishing moulding along the top edge. Cladding trim caps the boards, conceals raw edges and fixings, and creates the clean horizontal line that defines where the cladding ends and the wall begins. Available in five profiles - Astragal, Georgian, Scotia, Half Round, and Bolection - to suit any interior style.

Wall Cladding Ideas
Interior wall cladding works across every room in the home. The most popular applications are:
Hallways - a half-wall tongue and groove run capped with cladding trim gives an entrance hall immediate character and a sense of quality. Finish in a deep colour for maximum impact or in the same tone as the wall above for a quieter, more architectural effect. Link to tongue and groove cladding.
Living rooms - full-height cladding on a single feature wall behind a sofa or fireplace has become one of the most searched interior looks in the UK. The texture of the boards adds depth that paint alone cannot achieve, particularly in rooms lit by table lamps and candles where the shadow lines between boards become part of the atmosphere.
Bathrooms - interior MDF cladding can be used in bathrooms with correct preparation. Seal all board edges before installation and finish with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint for a durable, wipeable surface. Full-wall vertical runs work particularly well in narrow bathroom spaces where the upward line of the boards adds height.
Dining rooms - butt and bead cladding at dado height in a dining room brings a period quality to the space without the complexity of a full panelling scheme. Pair with a dado rail or cladding trim at the top and a skirting board at the bottom for a fully resolved finish.
Why MDF for Interior Wall Cladding?
Timber cladding is subject to seasonal movement - expanding in humid conditions and contracting as rooms dry out. Over time this causes gaps to open between boards, paint to crack along joints, and the flat surface of the wall to become uneven as individual boards cup and bow.
MDF is manufactured to remain dimensionally stable regardless of the conditions in the room. Boards stay tight, joints stay closed, and the surface stays flat. Pre-primed throughout - no additional sealing, priming, or preparation required before painting.
