Interior Wall Cladding

Wall cladding transforms the character of a room more completely than almost any other interior upgrade. Where paint changes colour, cladding changes the nature of the surface itself - introducing texture, depth, and a tactile quality that painted plaster simply cannot replicate. From half-wall dado height treatments to full floor-to-ceiling installations, interior wall cladding makes a room feel considered, finished, and worth being in.

MR Mouldings' interior wall cladding range covers tongue and groove cladding, butt and bead cladding, and cladding trim - all machined in pre-primed MDF for a stable, smooth, paint-ready finish. Designed exclusively for interior use, supplied in lengths ready to fit.

Interior Wall Cladding Overview

What is Interior Wall Cladding?

Interior wall cladding is a system of boards fixed directly to the wall surface to create a continuous textured finish in place of painted plaster. Unlike wall panelling - which uses moulding strips to create raised geometric frames on a flat wall - cladding covers the wall surface completely, board by board, with the profile of the boards themselves creating the decorative effect.

The result ranges from subtle to dramatic depending on the profile chosen, the height of the installation, and the colour it is painted. A half-wall run of tongue and groove in the same colour as the wall above reads as quiet and architectural. A full-height installation in a deep, saturated colour becomes the defining feature of the room.

For a raised panel effect rather than full surface cladding, browse our wall panelling and panel mouldings collections.

Tongue and Groove Cladding

The most widely used interior cladding profile. Each board has a protruding tongue on one edge that slots into a corresponding groove on the next, creating an interlocking run with no visible fixings and a seamless surface from end to end. The meeting point of each board creates a subtle V-shadow line that gives the wall its characteristic linear texture.

Tongue and groove cladding works at full wall height or at dado height. Boards can be fixed vertically - drawing the eye upward and making rooms feel taller - or horizontally, for a more contemporary, layered effect. Browse our tongue and groove cladding collection for the full range.

Butt and Bead Cladding

Where tongue and groove creates a V-line shadow at each joint, butt and bead cladding creates a bead - a small rounded detail at the point where adjacent boards meet. The result is a slightly more decorative surface texture with a softer, more rounded character than the sharp V-line of tongue and groove. It suits period and transitional interiors where a more traditional cladding aesthetic is called for.

Cladding Trim

Every interior cladding installation at dado height needs a finishing moulding along the top edge. Cladding trim caps the boards, conceals raw edges and fixings, and creates the clean horizontal line that defines where the cladding ends and the wall begins. Available in five profiles - Astragal, Georgian, Scotia, Half Round, and Bolection - to suit any interior style.

Wall Cladding Ideas

Interior wall cladding works across every room in the home. The most popular applications are:

Hallways - a half-wall tongue and groove run capped with cladding trim gives an entrance hall immediate character and a sense of quality. Finish in a deep colour for maximum impact or in the same tone as the wall above for a quieter, more architectural effect. Link to tongue and groove cladding.

Living rooms - full-height cladding on a single feature wall behind a sofa or fireplace has become one of the most searched interior looks in the UK. The texture of the boards adds depth that paint alone cannot achieve, particularly in rooms lit by table lamps and candles where the shadow lines between boards become part of the atmosphere.

Bathrooms - interior MDF cladding can be used in bathrooms with correct preparation. Seal all board edges before installation and finish with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint for a durable, wipeable surface. Full-wall vertical runs work particularly well in narrow bathroom spaces where the upward line of the boards adds height.

Dining rooms - butt and bead cladding at dado height in a dining room brings a period quality to the space without the complexity of a full panelling scheme. Pair with a dado rail or cladding trim at the top and a skirting board at the bottom for a fully resolved finish.

Why MDF for Interior Wall Cladding?

Timber cladding is subject to seasonal movement - expanding in humid conditions and contracting as rooms dry out. Over time this causes gaps to open between boards, paint to crack along joints, and the flat surface of the wall to become uneven as individual boards cup and bow.

MDF is manufactured to remain dimensionally stable regardless of the conditions in the room. Boards stay tight, joints stay closed, and the surface stays flat. Pre-primed throughout - no additional sealing, priming, or preparation required before painting.

Interior Wall Cladding FAQ

What is wall cladding?

Wall cladding is a system of boards fixed directly to an interior wall surface to create a continuous textured finish. MR Mouldings' interior wall cladding range includes tongue and groove and butt and bead profiles, all in pre-primed MDF. For a raised panel effect on a flat wall rather than full surface cladding, browse our wall panelling collection.

What is the difference between wall cladding and wall panelling?

Wall cladding covers the wall surface completely with interlocking boards, creating a continuous textured finish from board to board. Wall panelling uses moulding strips applied to a flat wall to create raised geometric frames - the wall surface between the mouldings remains visible. Both are interior wall treatments but they create fundamentally different visual effects.

Can interior wall cladding be used in a bathroom?

Yes, with the correct preparation. All board edges must be sealed before installation to prevent moisture ingress, and the finished surface should be painted with a moisture-resistant bathroom paint. MDF cladding is suitable for bathroom walls when correctly prepared - it should not be used in direct contact with water such as in a shower enclosure. Contact our team for specific advice on bathroom installations.

What height should wall cladding be fitted at?

The most common installation heights are dado height - roughly one third of the wall height, typically between 900mm and 1100mm from the floor - and full wall height. Dado height suits period and transitional interiors and works particularly well with a cladding trim or dado rail capping the top edge. Full height suits contemporary spaces and feature wall applications.

Does wall cladding need to be painted?

All MR Mouldings interior wall cladding is supplied pre-primed - the surface is sealed and ready for your chosen topcoat without any additional preparation. It can be painted in any standard water-based or oil-based decorator's paint. The most popular approach is to paint the cladding and the wall above in the same colour for a seamless, tonal finish, though contrasting colours between the cladded lower wall and painted upper wall are equally effective.
